Why is Aadhaar and UAN linking necessary?

If you do not link Aadhaar and UAN, then from 1st December 2021, the employer will not be able to add his monthly contribution to the EPF account of the employee. Also, it will be difficult for the employee to withdraw his provident fund. The deadline for linking UAN with Aadhaar was earlier 31 May 2021, which was extended to 31 August 2021. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has made it mandatory to link Aadhaar card with PF UAN (universal account number) for PF contribution and other benefits.

Code of Social Security 2020 has been amended


The Ministry of Labor has amended section 142 of the Code of Social Security 2020 to implement this new rule. This section provides for establishing the identity of an employee or an unorganized worker or any other person through Aadhaar number for availing benefits and availing services under the code. Although this code has not been implemented yet, its section 142 was notified by the Ministry of Labor and Employment on June 3. Under this, it is mandatory for employees and workers in the unorganized sector to provide Aadhaar number for registration, benefits or payment under various schemes.

Online way to link Aadhaar and UAN

  • Go to https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/
  • Now log in to the account with your UAN and Password.
  • Now click on the KYC option in the ‘Manage’ tab.
  • Now on the page that will open in front of you, you will see many documents to link your EPF account.
  • Here choose the Aadhar option and click on the service by typing your Aadhar number and your name on the Aadhar card.
  • If you do not want to enter the Aadhaar number, then you can enter the Virtual ID number.
  • After this you have to give consent for Aadhaar based authentication, after that click on ‘Save’ button.
  • Now your request will be reflected in ‘Pending KYC’ and your employer will have to give his approval so that UAN can be linked with Aadhaar.
  • Once approved by the employer, the data provided will be verified with the UIDAI data.
  • After getting the approval from EPFO, Aadhaar will be linked to your PF account and you will get Verify written in front of your Aadhaar information.

If there is doubt in linking then check status like this

  • Go to https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface/
  • Log in with your UAN and Password.
  • Now select the KYC option in the ‘Manage’ tab.
  • During screen check in Verified Documents tab, if Aadhaar number is showing Approved then it means Aadhaar and UAN are linked.

You can also link in these ways

Aadhar can also be linked with UAN through EPFO ​​website, UMANG app, OTP verification on EPFO’s e-KYC portal and through biometric credentials. Aadhaar can also be linked offline with EPF account. For this you have to go to the EPFO ​​office. Fill the “Aadhaar Seeding Application” form by visiting the EPFO ​​office. Enter your UAN and Aadhaar in the form with all the details. Attach self attested copies of your UAN, PAN and Aadhaar along with the form. Submit it to the executive in any field office of EPFO ​​or Common Service Center (CSC) outlet.
