The road to becoming an assistant professor is going to be difficult from next year. Because the qualification of PhD will be mandatory for appearing in the Assistant Professor recruitment exam from the year 2022-23. In 2018, the education ministry had said that in order to become an assistant professor in universities and colleges, from the academic session 2021-22, qualifying NET as well as PhD would be mandatory. In view of Corona, the ministry has stayed its decision for this year, so that the vacant teaching staff posts in educational institutions can be filled.
According to the report of All India Survey on Higher Education, about 40 lakh students take admission in PG every year, out of which about 2 lakh students take admission in PhD. The number of students who took admission in PhD this year was only 1,69,170. After this decision of the government, now lakhs of students will not have the option of becoming an assistant professor. This year only PG students who have qualified NET will be eligible for Assistant Professor Recruitment Exam. Students who dream of becoming an Assistant Professor will also have to take admission in PhD after PG. Without doing PhD, youth will no longer be able to participate in the recruitment of assistant professors in colleges and universities.
