Amid reports that 12 out of 17 Congress MLAs in Meghalaya are joining the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the TMC on Thursday termed the Congress “inept and incompetent” and asked Mamata Banerjee to leave the party. The party cannot be held responsible. The Trinamool, in an article published in its mouthpiece ‘Jago Bangla’, said it would expand its penetration in other states to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Trinamool said, “There are serious problems in the Congress. When one of its leaders joins Trinamool, she criticizes us. It appears that the Congress’s West Bengal unit chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has more problems with this than the central leadership.
The editorial said, “The Congress has failed to give a fight to the BJP. On the other hand, (West Bengal Chief Minister) Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool have shown how to defeat (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi and (Home Minister Amit) Shah. For this reason, Trinamool has received requests to set up its units in other states as well. Leaders want to join our party. They think Mamata Banerjee is the alternate face. Trinamool cannot be held responsible for Congress’s incompetence and inability to fight BJP.
The mouthpiece referred to Banerjee’s proposal to set up a Joint Steering Committee during the opposition meeting called by Congress President Sonia Gandhi on August 20 and said that since then no step has been taken in that direction.

The mouthpiece said, “Congress has been reduced to air-conditioned rooms and social media. He did not take any initiative to form an opposition alliance. They also failed to prepare a campaign against the BJP. Be it Goa or Tripura, Trinamool is fighting at the grassroots level.
The TMC said, “Our party supremo wants a pan-India national alliance against the BJP. We never said that opposition alliance will be formed without Congress, but if Congress cannot discharge its duty, then we cannot do anything in it. They cannot blame us for their incompetence.

Taking a dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s defeat in Amethi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Trinamool recently asked whether the Congress would erase the defeat through a Twitter trend. The ties between the Congress and the Trinamool were further strained when ‘Jago Bangla’ claimed that it was Banerjee, not Rahul Gandhi, who had emerged as the face of the opposition against Prime Minister Modi.
