12 September 2022 : Congress posted this photo from its Twitter handle. He wrote, ‘Step by step we will reach our goal to repair the damage caused by BJP-RSS and to free this country from the shackles of hatred.’ This was tweeted during Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’.

Since then there has been an uproar over it. BJP has termed it as an act of incitement to violence. Actually this Khaki Half Pant used to be the uniform of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh i.e. RSS for more than 90 years.

In such a situation, in today’s explainer, we will tell the story of Khaki becoming the uniform of RSS…

The year 1925 was the day of Vijay Dashami. Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar founded the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on the day of Vijay Dashmi in Nagpur. Hedgewar was influenced by Bal Gangadhar Tilak. Hindu Mahasabha politician and Nagpur social activist BS Munje was its political patron. Its members drew inspiration from European right-wing groups during World War II to form the RSS.

RSS had also decided its uniform at the time of its formation. This included khaki half pants, khaki shirt, leather belt, black boots, khaki cap and sticks. It is believed that the khaki half pants were taken from the police of the British era. At that time the era of world war was going on. Along with the police, the dress of army personnel was also khaki. It was only after this that RSS members wearing dhoti were asked to wear khaki shirt and half pants.

Keshav Baliram Hedgewar wanted discipline to be reflected in the dress. In such a situation, he prepared a dress code of khaki shirt, khaki half pants, khaki cap for the members.

1930 : Socialist Inspired by Mussolini, the khaki cap turns black

RSS made the first change in its uniform in 1930. During this, the khaki cap was changed to a black cap. At that time people were troubled by the capitalist system. In such a situation, Italian socialist leader Benito Mussolini emerged as a hope for the people. He came to be considered a leader who changed the lives of common people.

In such a situation, the RSS was also influenced by him. Mussolini used to wear a black cap. RSS also made its cap color black. However, Mussolini later became a dictator.

1940: Adopted white shirt so that the British army did not wear uniform

The next change in the uniform of RSS took place in 1940. During that time the khaki shirt was replaced by the white shirt, because the uniform of the RSS was similar to the uniform of the British army. In 1973, the bulky military black boots were changed to normal shoes. That is, RSS members can also wear Raxin’s shoes.

Leather belts were replaced by canvas in 2011

In 2011, the RSS replaced the leather belt and adopted the canvas belt. On this change, the RSS had said that canvas belts are cheap and can be easily maintained.

Brown full pants replaced khaki half pants in 2016

In 2015, for the first time, news came that Khaki would replace half pants with full pants in the Sangh. Some old Sanghis were against this change. At the same time, many campaigners believed that the youth were reluctant to join the union because of the khaki half pants.

At that time both Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat and Sarkaryavah Bhaiyyaji Joshi were in favor of the new uniform and believed that we should change with the times.

In March 2016, the Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha in Nagaur, Rajasthan announced the inclusion of khaki full pants in the uniform. The Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha is the highest decision-making body of the RSS.

Then Bhaiyyaji Joshi had said that this verdict shows that the organization is not rigid about anything and can move forward with time. Trousers have become a necessity in today’s social life. So we cannot remain conservative.

He said that the pants will be designed in such a way that it is comfortable for physical exercise. Brown color was chosen because it is easily available and looks good.

In 2016, RSS adopted brown full pants by removing khaki half pants on its foundation day i.e. Dussehra. At that time the RSS had also approved a change in the color of its socks. Khaki colored socks were also replaced by brown colours. That is, now RSS workers started wearing white shirt and black cap with brown full pants.

In 2016, in the All India Pratinidhi Sabha of RSS, instead of khaki half pants, brown colored full pants were made part of the uniform.

Uniform was needed for the spirit of unity and fraternity.

According to the RSS website, physical exercises and parades are an important part of the Sangh’s training. This is done to make the volunteers physically and psychologically strong. Uniform maintains its discipline. This maintains unity and brotherhood among the volunteers coming from different social, economic and educational backgrounds.

Uniform is not available for free

According to the RSS website, the uniform is used for some formal parades and functions and not for everyday work. Any Sangh worker can join the daily branch wearing a respectable dress. RSS uniform is available in the local union offices. Volunteers can buy it from here. It is not available for free.

NSUI workers burnt khaki pants in Karnataka in June

In June this year, workers of the National Students Union of India (NSUI), a student organization of the Congress, protested against the RSS. He alleged that RSS ideology is being included in the syllabus of school children in Karnataka. In protest, he burnt khaki half pants outside the house of Karnataka Education Minister BC Nagesh.

After this, the police took the protesting activists into custody. Former Karnataka CM and Congress leader Siddaramaiah got furious on this. He said that NSUI workers burnt the chaddis. So! Is this a crime? How did this become antisocial? Is it a violation of law to protest against the government?

On Siddaramaiah’s statement, BJP leader Narayanaswamy said that if he wants to burn the chaddi, then he should not burn it in his house. I have asked the workers of all the districts to help Siddaramaiah in sending chaddis. After this the workers of BJP and RSS started sending chaddis to the Congress office.
