CWG 2022: India’s star badminton player PV Sindhu defeated Canada’s Michelle Li on Monday to win India’s 19th gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. Sindhu won the women’s singles final with a 21-15, 21-13 win over Michelle Li. Sindhu initially looked down with an injury during Game 1 of the gold medal match, but she continued her winning run and took a 1-0 lead with a score of 21-15.
Sindhu won Game 2 21-13 and completed the victory in straight sets. Sindhu’s gold took India’s total medal tally at CWG 2022 to 56, which now includes 19 gold medals, 15 silver medals and 22 bronze medals. India will be eyeing two more gold medals in badminton on the final day of the Commonwealth Games 2022.
PV Sindhu’s gold medal campaign in Commonwealth Games 2022
Two-time Olympic medalist for India, PV Sindhu began her women’s singles campaign at CWG 2022 with a 21-4, 21-11 win against Maldives’ Fathimath Nabaha in the round of 32. She continued her winning momentum with a 21–10 win over Uganda’s Husina Kobugabe in the round of 16, 21–9, to advance to the quarterfinals. Sindhu registered a 19-21, 21-14, 21-18 win over Malaysia’s Jin Wei Goh to book a place in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, in the semi-finals of women’s singles badminton at CWG 2022 in Birmingham, Sindhu registered a 21-19, 21-17 win over Jia Min Yeo of Singapore. Significantly, this was PV Sindhu’s second gold medal win in the Commonwealth Games. During the 2018 edition of the CWG at Goldcoast, PV Sindhu won the gold medal in the mixed team event and the silver medal in the women’s singles event.
