An Indian-origin Singaporean woman has confessed to attacking her father with a hammer after he ignored repeated warnings not to drink alcohol in the house. According to the Strait Times newspaper, in January 2020, Sivadarshini Karunanethi attacked her 53-year-old father with a hammer because he ignored her repeated requests and warnings not to drink alcohol in the house.
Deputy Public Prosecutor David Koh said Shivdarshini, who had completed her studies at a technical education institute, was looking for employment and was living with her father, mother and younger sister. According to her, on January 6, 2020, she woke up to the clanking of utensils and came out to see her father sleeping with utensils of liquor. By then Shivdarshini’s mother had gone to work and her sister was sleeping in her room.
Koh said that the accused had already warned her father not to drink alcohol in the house because he used to urinate on himself when drunk and either he or his mother had to clean up afterwards. He told that in such a situation Shivdarshini brought a hammer from the kitchen and attacked her father furiously, and later she herself informed the police about the incident.
The police reached there and arrested Shivdarshini and admitted her father to the hospital. Sentencing in the case will take place on April 5. The offense of voluntarily causing hurt is punishable by up to three years in prison, a fine of up to S$5,000, or both.
