With the help of a simple blood test, this molecule will be able to be identified and it will be detected two to five years before dementia occurs. Due to this, proper treatment of the patient will be possible in time.
Researchers from DZNE and the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) have discovered a biomarker. It is measured at the levels of microRNA. It affects the production of microRNA proteins. That is why it is the main process of metabolism of every living system. As a technique, its use is not practical. That’s why the scientists aim to create a simple, cheap blood test, which will be similar to the test for Kovid-19. And given the risk of dementia, it can be used in routine medical check-ups.
According to study data in the scientific journal AMBO Molecular Medicine, it was reported that microRNAs can be used to treat dementia. By the time the threat of dementia symptoms emerge, a lot of damage has already been done to the brain.
Professor Andre Feicher, from the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at UMG, said that at present, there is no opportunity for effective treatment, because the disease is too late to be recognized. That’s why we need a test that warns of the possibility of dementia long before it is confirmed. He said he is confident that his research will open the way for such a new test. Examining the data in the research, it was found that there is a correlation between the levels of microRNA and mental health. The lower its level in the blood test, the better its recognition power. Its symptoms emerge suddenly in both young and old people. His ability to recognize begins to diminish. In humans, when there is an excess of this molecule in the blood, memory begins to deteriorate. Its effect is visible in the next two to five years. This research has been done on rats.
