Brussels, AP. European Parliament (EU) President David Sassoli died on Tuesday. Sasoli, who was ailing since last year, was 65 years old. Most of the tenure of Sasoli, who was elected president in 2019, was affected by the Corona epidemic. In this tenure of about two and a half years, he is credited with bringing new changes such as the remote voting system in the European Parliament.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed grief over the demise of Sasoli. He tweeted, ‘Very sad to hear the news of Sasoli’s demise. His warm personality will live on in our memories. Condolences to his family.

Let us inform that in a show of solidarity during the pandemic, Sasoli had converted parliamentary premises into aid centres, where arrangements were made for cooking and COVID testing for needy families. Sassoli was a well-known Italian TV journalist before being elected to the European Parliament in 2009.
