External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday met former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his younger brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa and discussed various issues of mutual interest. During this, the Rajapaksa brothers thanked the Government of India for their commitment to help Sri Lanka in times of crisis.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa (73) left the country for Maldives in July last year when the country was facing its most serious economic and humanitarian crisis. Jaishankar tweeted, “Met former President Rajapaksa today. Discussed the current challenges facing Sri Lanka and India’s steadfast support in this hour of need.

Mahinda Rajapaksa (77) tweeted, “Had successful discussions with Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar and discussed a number of issues of mutual interest.” Thanked the Government of India for its firm commitment and strong ties between Sri Lanka and India.

Jaishankar also met Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa and discussed bilateral relations. He tweeted, “Nice to meet Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa. Discussed about our bilateral relations. Jaishankar also met Sri Lankan Fisheries Minister Douglas Devanan. The External Affairs Minister said in a tweet, “Discussed cooperation on fisheries and emphasized on working together and humanitarian approach.”
