Male:

On Tuesday, a mob of religious fanatics stormed an event related to International Yoga Day at the National Football Stadium in the capital of Maldives and temporarily disrupted it. During this, the mob ransacked and damaged property. The police said in a statement that it is treating the incident as a serious issue. The matter is being investigated by the Serious and Organized Crime Department. So far six people have been taken into custody.

The Maldivian Police Service has launched an investigation, giving high priority to the disruption in the event held at the National Stadium. “The perpetrators tried to create fear by entering forcibly, damaging property and attempting to attack the participants of the event,” the statement said, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment and the United Nations in the Maldives. Diplomats, dignitaries and common people participated in this event organized by the Indian High Commission in the country. After a brief pause, the program resumed and the session ended successfully.

In a separate statement, the Maldivian government strongly condemned the “violent acts committed by a group of individuals” targeting participants, including diplomats, who attended the 8th International Day of Yoga. “Such malicious acts of violence aimed at disrupting public safety and disregarding the security of individuals and the diplomatic corps will not be tolerated,” the government said in a statement. The authorities have started an investigation into the incident and the government will ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice expeditiously.

Police said that the findings of the preliminary investigation revealed that some of the material used by the rioters came from the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) office. Police said, “The evidence found so far suggests that the protesters used material brought from the PPM’s office.” According to the Sun newspaper, the PPM issued a statement condemning the incident. There are allegations that the flags used by the miscreants were the same as those used in the “Nabiaz Dhifougai” rally organized by the PPM recently.

Some people allege that the flags used by the rioters were the same as those used in the rally organized by the PPM recently. Sports Minister Ahmed Mahloof alleged that stopping the event by calling yoga an anti-Islamic campaign was a political act. The newspaper quoted the minister as saying that PPM and Jamiat Salaf are involved in this incident. However, Salaf has issued a statement denying his involvement in the incident. International Yoga Day is celebrated every year on 21st June across the world. This day is being celebrated in Maldives since the year 2015.
