Boston, PTI. Terming the Lakhimpur Kheri violence as completely condemnable, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday said such incidents are happening in other parts of the country as well. They should be picked up only when they are, not when they suit them because there is a BJP government in Uttar Pradesh. He also said that the BJP is not defensive on this issue. The Finance Minister said this in response to a question during a discussion at Harvard Kennedy School.
He was asked why there was no statement from the Prime Minister and senior ministers in this regard and why there is a defensive reaction when someone questions about these things. On this, Sitharaman said that no, it is not like that at all. It is good that you raised this incident which is absolutely condemnable, that is what we all say. Similar incidents are happening in other places as well, which is my concern. Such issues are happening in many parts of India. I want everyone who knows India including you and Dr. Amartya Sen to pick them up whenever they happen, not just when they are in their favor because the state is under BJP government.
Sitharaman said that the son of one of my cabinet colleagues is probably in trouble and let’s also assume that whatever happened, he did it, no one else did. Even then there will be a whole process of investigation to establish it under Nyaya. He further said, ‘This is not to be defensive of my party or the Prime Minister. This is about India being defensive. I will speak for India. I will talk of justice for the poor.
Targeting Amartya Sen
To a question by Harvard professor Laurence Summers about Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen’s strong reaction to the BJP government, Sitharaman said it is worrying that now scholars may also be influenced and are not allowed to comment based on facts. Instead they become slaves to their likes and dislikes. The Finance Minister said that law and order is a state subject and the Prime Minister is also held accountable for violence in those states where the BJP is not in government as it feels favorable to him.
