India likely to grow 300 million OTT users: Minister Anurag Thakur

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said on Thursday that India’s OTT market can grow at the rate of 21 percent every year. He invited foreign producers to shoot films in the country.

Addressing the ‘India Forum’ at Cannes, Thakur said the government would take all necessary steps to accelerate co-production from across the world and also provide the best location in the country for shooting of films.

A press release quoted the minister as saying, “We are going to take another big leap as 30 crore citizens are about to join online. India is moving ahead to strengthen its position in the media and entertainment sector.

Thakur said that Indian startups in the media and entertainment sector will do their best in the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics (AVGC) industry.

He said that the government has taken major initiatives in the last eight years to promote co-productions, film shootings, etc. in India.

The Minister said that many such efforts are being made to grow India’s media and entertainment sector which can generate revenue of $53 billion every year by 2025.
