Bali, PTI. India’s two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu registered a struggling win in the women’s singles opening round of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 badminton tournament here on Wednesday while B Sai Praneeth and Kidambi Srikanth also advanced to the men’s singles second round.

Reigning world champion Sindhu made a good comeback after losing the first game against Japan’s Aya Ohori. They defeated Ohori 17-21, 21-17, 21-17 in a match that lasted one hour and 10 minutes to reach the pre-quarterfinals. With this win, Sindhu took her impressive record against the Japanese to 11-0. World No. 7 Sindhu, who was eliminated from the semi-finals after a straight-game loss to Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi last week, will next take on 23-year-old German shuttler Yvonne Lee. This will be the first match between the third seeded Indian and world number 26 Lee.

In men’s singles, world number 16 B Sai Praneeth registered a 21-19, 21-18 win over France’s Toma Junior Popov in the opening round. Like last week’s Indonesia Masters quarter-final, Srikanth again defeated compatriot HS Prannoy. After reaching successive semi-finals at the Hilo Open and Indonesia Masters, former number one Srikanth continued his good form here as well, beating Prannoy 21-15, 19-21, 21-12 in 56 minutes.

Mixed doubles pair of N Sikki Reddy and Dhruv Kapila crashed out of the first round after losing 7-21, 12-21 to Japanese pair of Kyohei Yamashita and Naru Shinoya. On the other hand, N Sikki Reddy and veteran shuttler Ashwini Ponnappa lost 27-29, 18-21 to fifth seeded Bulgarian pair of Gabriella Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva.
