New Delhi, PTI. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that it is a proud day for India to become self-reliant in the defense sector as the destroyer INS Visakhapatnam inducted into the Indian Navy. The indigenously developed ship will strengthen the security system of the country. Our efforts towards defense modernization are continuing with full gusto. He said this in a tweet. The indigenous stealth guided missile destroyer, armed with a series of missiles and anti-submarine rockets, was inducted into the Navy in the presence of top naval commanders in Mumbai.

Officials said Visakhapatnam is well equipped with lethal weapons and sensors including surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, medium and short-range guns, anti-submarine rockets and advanced electronic warfare and communication suits. The ship is equipped with a modern surveillance radar, which provides target data to the ship’s artillery weapon systems.

INS Visakhapatnam has a length of 163 meters and a width of 17 meters and its displacement is 7,400 tonnes. The ship is powered by four powerful gas turbines. It is capable of achieving speeds of more than 30 knots. The warship will be capable of fighting in nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) warfare situations. INS Visakhapatnam is equipped with some of the major indigenous equipment/systems Combat Management System, Rocket Launcher, Torpedo Tube Launcher, Integrated Platform Management System, Automated Power Management System, Foldable Hangar Doors, Halo Traversing System, Close-in Weapon System and Bow Mounted Sonar.
