The Hague-based ICC said it had also issued a warrant against Russia’s presidential commissioner for children’s rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, on similar charges.
The Hague:
The International Criminal Court announced on Friday that it has issued an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin. The said action has been taken for “illegal deportation” of Ukrainian children.
The Hague-based ICC said it had also issued a warrant against Russia’s presidential commissioner for children’s rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, on similar charges.
Russia is not a member of the ICC. In such a situation, it is not clear how the ICC plans to implement the warrant. “Today, the Pre-Trial Chamber II of the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for two individuals in the context of the situation in Ukraine, including Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova,” the ICC said in a statement. .”
Vladimir Putin is “allegedly responsible for the war crime of illegal deportation of children and illegal transfer of children from the occupied territories of Ukraine to the Russian Federation.”
The ICC said the crimes date back to February 24, 2022, when Russia attacked Ukraine. It added, “There are reasonable grounds to believe that Putin bears personal criminal responsibility for the above crimes.”
