Male, Agency. On the occasion of International Yoga Day, extremists attacked the National Stadium in Maldivian capital Male at a function organized by the Indian High Commission. People doing yoga were assaulted. Due to this the yoga program was interrupted for some time. The government has ordered an inquiry into the matter and the police have arrested six people. President Ibrahim Solih has condemned it. He said that the matter is being investigated and the culprits will be brought to justice soon.

Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said a police investigation had been launched into the incident. Solih tweeted, ‘An investigation has been launched by @PoliceMv into the incident at Galolu Stadium this morning. This is being considered as a matter of serious concern and the culprits will be brought before the court of justice soon.

It is believed that this is the work of anti-India political parties who are inciting fundamentalist sentiments for political gains. The police have taken the matter seriously and the Department of Serious and Organized Crime is investigating it. It was organized by the Indian High Commission in association with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment of the Maldives, which was attended by ambassadors and diplomats as well as the general public. The Maldivian government has also issued a separate statement condemning the incident. The government said that this incident which threatens the security of the common people and diplomats will not be tolerated. A special inquiry will be launched into the incident and the government will ensure that the culprits get strict punishment.

Malicious acts will not be tolerated

The government said that such malicious acts of violence aimed at disrupting public safety and undermining the security of individuals and the diplomatic corps will not be tolerated, the government statement said on the occasion of the 8th United Nations International Day of Yoga. Strongly condemns the violent acts committed by a group of individuals targeting the participants, including members of the diplomatic community attending the ceremony. The purpose of such malicious acts of violence is to disrupt the public. Undermining the security and security of individuals and the diplomatic corps will not be tolerated.

International Yoga Day is celebrated across the world on 21 June every year. This day is being celebrated in Maldives since 2015. On Tuesday, an International Yoga Day event organized by the Indian Embassy in Male was disrupted after a crowd stormed a stadium where more than 150 people were celebrating the event.
