Mumbai:

Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant’s decisions on the field during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) may have been criticized by former players, but the team’s head coach Ricky Ponting fully supported the wicket-keeper batsman, saying that ‘ It is easier to decide from outside. Out of the 11 matches that Delhi has played under Pant, they have won only five. They had to face a crushing defeat by 91 runs at the hands of Chennai Super Kings on Sunday. Pant has been criticized by former players like Virender Sehwag for his change in bowling and selection of bowlers at crucial junctures in the match, but former Australia captain Ponting said that he fully supports Pant’s every decision.

Ponting said after the match, ‘I fully support every decision taken by him (Pant) on the field. I have also captained in T20 and I know that you do not have much time to think especially in situations of extreme pressure. So it would not have been an easy task.

Ponting said, “A captain takes a decision in a very short time and whatever decision he feels is best for the team in the circumstances of the match.” He takes into account things like the distance of the boundary line and the batsmen at the crease while making decisions. Ponting, however, admitted that his team performed poorly in all departments of the game in the crushing defeat against Chennai.

Delhi Capitals coach said, ‘Our bowling was not good. Our batting was also very bad. Not many positive aspects have been there for us in this match. Only Khaleel Ahmed’s performance was positive. He bowled brilliantly again.’ Ponting said, ‘We lost this match by 91 runs, which will have a negative impact on our net run rate. This means that we have to do very well in our upcoming matches.’ He, however, said that Delhi’s team can make it to the playoffs by winning the remaining three matches. Ponting said, ‘We can make the playoffs with three wins. For that eight wins can be enough and a big win can improve our net run rate. Who knows we may even reach the finals.
