IT industry divided into two factions on Moonlighting: Premji and Chris told Moonlighting wrong, veterans like Pai in its favor

The issue has been heated in the IT sector after the expulsion of around 300 employees of Wipro who were found doing moonlighting. Giants like Mohandas Pai and Infosys co-founder Krish Gopal Krishnan have come face to face on this issue.

Moonlighting means working in one company and also working for another company. Many employees adopted such a practice while working from home during the Kovid epidemic. This trend has been seen the most, especially in the IT sector.

In a recent survey by Kotak Institutional Equities, out of 400 people in the IT industry, about 65% believed that they were either doing moonlighting themselves or knew people who do moonlighting.

Earlier, Wipro Executive Chairman Rishad Premji had opposed it in several public forums, terming Moonlighting as a fraud. After that Infosys also warned its employees against moonlighting.

The management had also threatened to fire such employees. This was followed by a heated debate on the ethics and legality of moonlighting.

These giants in opposition:
1. Kris Gopalakrishnan

The co-founder of Infosys said that working for more than one company at the same time breaks trust.  The productivity of employees doing other jobs will be affected.  Because of this, situations like conflicts and data breach can also arise.

2. Rishad Premji

The executive chairman of Wipro believes that the employees doing moonlighting in a way cheat both the companies for which they work.  It cannot be accepted.

2. CP Gurnani

The CEO of Tech Mahindra believes that employees have every right to earn extra money by using their potential, but only as long as this work is done with transparency, but this does not seem to be happening right now.

Food delivery platform Swiggy has rolled out the industry’s first moonlighting policy. Through this, the company has motivated the employees to do some other work after work. Swiggy believes that every individual has the right to personal and professional development.
