New Delhi, ANI. In Meghalaya, 12 out of 17 Congress MLAs joined the Trinamool Congress on Thursday. Congress, the oldest party in the northeastern state, has suffered a major setback. Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said that Rahul Gandhi and others in the high command are considering it. Talking to news agency ANI, Kharge said, ‘It is happening like a conspiracy. Our party people, especially our party president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and others in the high command are watching this. They will take a decision on this matter.

At the same time, he said, ‘But I would like to say that we will try to defeat BJP in Parliament and fight against their ideology, whatever party or ideology we belong to. We will continue to fight (against BJP) by meeting. People who have always been with us.’

Meanwhile, former Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, who joined the TMC earlier, today said that the country needs an all-India opposition party and the Congress has failed to fulfill it. Addressing a press conference, Sangma said that we have taken the right decision to associate with All India Trinamool Congress.

Attacking the Congress, Sangma said, “We have a team in Meghalaya which has demonstrated efficiency and has earned the trust of the people.” This trust and respect should be respected. The former chief minister said, “(Being Congress) we are failing to fulfill the responsibility of the opposition party. We are failing to fulfill our duty and responsibilities. The pulse of India is that there is a need for a strong alternative opposition and political party.

On joining TMC, Sangma further said that the Congress party has failed to really respond to its call of duty as a main opposition party in the country based on perception. So our exercise of finding a viable alternative to look after the state, the North-East region and the country came to an end.
