Makar sankranti 2022: The festival of Makar Sankranti is celebrated with pomp across the country. Khichdi, Pongal and Bihu are also celebrated on this day. It is a religious belief that by bathing in the Ganges and giving up on the day of Makar Sankranti, all the sins of a person are cut away. On the other hand, by offering obeisances to the ancestors, they attain salvation. Later on, King Bhagiratha did hard penance to get salvation for his ancestors. Pleased with his penance, Mother Parvati had descended on the earth in the form of Ganga. Because of this, the sons of King Sagar had attained salvation. There are many other mythological stories as well. Let’s know-

It is implied in the Sanatan religious texts that Lord Shri Hari had incarnated on earth during the divine period. At that time he had incarnated on earth as Kapil Muni. Later on, Lord started doing penance by making an ashram near Gangasagar. In those days the fame of King Sagar was in all the three worlds. All the kings glorified Sagar’s benevolence and virtuous deeds. Seeing this, King Indra became very angry and worried. Indra, the king of heaven, felt that if King Sagara was not stopped, he would later become the king of heaven.

This thought King Indra stole the horse for the Yagya organized by King Sagar and tied it near the ashram of Kapil Muni. When King Sagara got the information of the horse being stolen, he ordered all his sons to find the horse. When Kapil saw a horse tied outside Manu’s ashram, the sons of King Sagara accused Kapil Muni of stealing the horse. Hearing this, Kapil Muni got furious and immediately sent all the sons of King Sagara to ashes and sent them to Hades.

When King Sagara came to know about this, he fell at the feet of Kapil Muni and pleaded for the pardon of his sons. However, the curse is not withdrawn. Therefore Kapil Muni advised him to bring Ganga to earth for salvation to the sons. Then King Bhagirath did hard penance for Mother Parvati. Pleased with this, Mother Parvati took the form of Ganga and descended on the earth on the day of Makar Sankranti. When the dead sons of King Sagara touched the Ganges, they attained salvation.

Once upon a time there were two demons named Madhu and Kaitabh. who were of demonic nature. Due to their atrocities and misery, there was an outcry in the three worlds. After this Lord Vishnu killed both of them and threw their torso in two opposite directions. However, the torso united again to become Madhu and Kaitabh and started creating their terror in the three worlds.

After this Lord Vishnu invoked Adishakti and Mother Durga killed both of them. Later, Lord Shri Hari Vishnu brought Madhu and Kaitabh to the earth world and buried them under the Mandar mountain, so that they could not be born again. Then Madhu and Kaitabh asked him for a boon to have darshan on the day of Makar Sankranti. Vishnu accepted this boon of the demons. Since time immemorial, Lord Narayan comes to give darshan to the Mandar mountain demons on the day of Makar Sankranti. Apart from this, Suryadev visits his son Shani Dev’s house on the day of Makar Sankranti for a month.
