New Delhi, Auto Desk. We informed you earlier that Suzuki is developing the next generation Swift hatchback, which is likely to be unveiled in 2022. In addition, the company will introduce the next generation Swift Sport in the international markets by 2023. A new media report claims that Suzuki plans to introduce a small SUV based on the next generation Swift hatchback.

The report further claims that the new Swift based SUV will be launched in 2024. The upcoming 5-seater small SUV will be based on the performance-oriented Swift Sport. In the Japanese market, the new Swift Sport based SUV will be introduced as an upper light class SUV.

The new Swift based SUV is likely to be powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 48V mild hybrid system. In its current form, the 1.4L turbo engine is capable of producing 129bhp of power and 235Nm of peak torque. This engine will also power the new Swift Sport and the international-spec Suzuki Jimny 5-door variant.

Coming to the cabin of the Suzuki Swift based SUV, it is likely to feature a modern cabin to make the inside seating experience even better for the passengers. At the same time, design elements like high ground clearance and SUV can be given in it. For instance, body cladding, skid plates, roof rails and long stance are likely to be found. The Japanese-spec model may also get an updated suspension set-up and Suzuki’s AllGrip AWD system.

Interestingly, Maruti Suzuki is also preparing a compact crossover based on the Baleno hatchback. This model is reportedly positioned under the Nexon, and will compete with the recently launched Tata Punch. Codenamed YTB, the new SUV will be designed on the Heartect platform, which is said to be made from ultra and advanced high tensile steel.

The mini SUV is likely to be powered by a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine that powers the Baleno hatchback. The engine will also benefit from a 12V mild hybrid system, which should improve fuel efficiency.
