Renowned Mohiniyattam dancer Kanaka Rele, who took classical dance to new heights in her eight-decade-long career, was remembered by her family and friends as a ‘good-hearted woman’. Renowned Kuchipudi dancer Raja Reddy said that her contribution to the field of Mohini Attam will always be remembered by generations to come. Reddy (79) told ‘PTI-Bhasha’, ‘She was one of those who brought the respective classical dance forms to the fore. His demise is extremely sad for the dance community. May God give peace to his soul.
Raile’s daughter-in-law Uma Raile, who is also the principal of Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya, said she would carry forward the artist’s vision and legacy. “She has created a prestigious place for all of us associated with dance by introducing dance academics at the university level, and we promise to carry forward her legacy,” Uma told PTI.

Apart from family and friends, institutions such as the Sangeet Natak Akademi and Bharatanatyam dancer and actress Hema Malini mourned the death of Kanaka Raila. Raile was honored with Padma Shri (1989), Padma Bhushan (2013), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1994), Kalidas Samman (2006) and MS Subbulakshmi Award, among others. A prayer meet was organized on Saturday in memory of the legendary dancer. Will go She is survived by her husband Yatindra Rele, son Rahul and grandchildren Vaidehi and Nikunj.
