New Delhi, Jnn. NATO vs Russia: It has been several months since the Russia-Ukraine war. NATO is believed to be a major reason behind this war. It is believed that Russia declared war on Kyiv because of Ukraine’s interest in the NATO organization and its proximity to the US. Russia had threatened Ukraine several times regarding its strategic relationship with America and its membership of NATO. Despite Russian opposition, Ukraine remained adamant about NATO membership. Its result turned into a great war. Not only this, Russia has also threatened Finland and Sweden that they should be ready to face the consequences if they join NATO. Why is Russia so averse to NATO? What is the main reason behind this? In such a situation, let us know what is in which Finland wants to join? Why is Russia opposing the expansion of NATO in Europe? How did Russia attack Ukraine because of NATO?

What is NATO and its purpose

1- The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a military alliance formed in 1949. Initially there were 12 countries. These included the US, Canada, Britain and France. The basic principle of this organization is that if one member country is attacked, then the rest of the countries will come forward to help it. The original purpose of this organization was to stop Russia’s expansion into Europe after the Second World War.

2- The NATO organization is constantly expanding. At present there are 30 member countries in this organization. These include 28 European and two North American countries. The biggest responsibility of this organization is to protect NATO countries and its population. According to Article 5 of NATO, an attack on any of its member states will be considered an attack on all NATO countries.

3- However, in 1955, the then Soviet Union formed its own separate military alliance with the communist countries of Eastern Europe in response to NATO. It was named the Warsaw Pact, but after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, several countries that were part of the Warsaw Pact switched sides and joined NATO. In fact, even though America is included in the NATO organization as a country, but it is dominated by the organization.

4- Most of the soldiers in the NATO organization are from America. NATO troops have laid complete siege of Russia in the name of security of the member countries of the organization. NATO soldiers are present under the nose of Russia. America’s 13 and a half million soldiers are present. This is Russia’s biggest concern. Turkey has a place in this organization in terms of army. About 3.5 million Turkish soldiers are involved in the organization. France is in third place. More than two lakh French soldiers are part of the NATO organization. German is at number four. Italy comes in fifth place. Britain is in sixth place. From the point of view of the presence of the army, America is dominated by this organization.

NATO alerts 8,500 soldiers

After the Russia-Ukraine war, the US has deployed 3,000 additional troops to Poland and Romania to strengthen NATO’s eastern borders. Apart from this, 8,500 soldiers have been kept on alert. Apart from this, NATO has also sent weapons worth about $ 200 million to Ukraine, including Javelin anti-tank missiles and Stinger anti-aircraft missiles. Britain has supplied two thousand short-range anti-tank missiles to Ukraine. Poland has sent 350 soldiers and has doubled its strength by sending an additional 900 soldiers to Estonia.

What does Russian President Putin want?

1- Prof Harsh V Pant says that Russia wants guarantee from Western countries and America that it will never make Ukraine a part of NATO. The question arises as to what other things Russian President Putin is worried about. Russian President Putin claims that Western countries are using NATO to enter Russian territory. He wants NATO to put an end to its military activities in Eastern Europe. Putin has been arguing that America has broken the promise made in 1990. It assured that NATO would not move east. At the same time, America says that it never made any such promise. NATO says that only some of its member countries have borders with Russia. It is a protective alliance.

2- Prof Pant says that from the very beginning Russia has been trying to make Ukraine, formed after the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991. However, Ukraine leaned towards the West to protect itself from Russian domination. In December 2021, Ukraine expressed its desire to join the US-dominated world’s most powerful military alliance NATO. This effort of Ukraine went unnoticed by Russia and it attacked Ukraine in February. Actually, Ukraine has a border with Russia for more than 2,200 km. Russia believes that if Ukraine joins NATO, NATO forces will reach the Russian border on the pretext of Ukraine. In such a situation, the distance of Russia’s capital Moscow from the western countries will be only 640 kilometers. At present this distance is about 1,600 km. Now Russia is facing the same crisis with Sweden and Finland.
