Dubai, PTI. New Zealand was the first country to announce its squad for the ICC T20 World Cup. New Zealand is also the first team to arrive to prepare for this tournament to be played in UAE and Oman, hosted by BCCI. The team won the ICC title this year by defeating India in the Test Championship final. Now the team intends to become the T20 World Cup champion.
The New Zealand team is currently busy preparing for the T20 World to be played between October 17 and November 14. Strange as it may sound, but New Zealand Cricket has appointed former fast bowler Shane Bond to work exclusively with the spinners of the national team during the T20 World Cup.
Bond will remain with the team as the fourth coach. He will assist bowling coach Shane Jurgensen, working with the team’s spinners. New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said, ‘He is working exclusively with the spinners. It’s good when you see a large number of bowlers. This will help Shane (Jurgensen). He is working exclusively with the spinners and deciding the strategy. Bond has joined the team after Mumbai (Indians) got out of the IPL.
Bond is also the bowling coach of Mumbai Indians. Stead is confident that his team’s main batsman Kane Williamson will be fit before the team’s first match against Pakistan on 26 October. Williamson suffered a muscle strain during an IPL match last week.
Williamson did not play the last league match for Sunrisers Hyderabad, but Stead said that his injury is not a concern. Williamson has joined the New Zealand team after IPL. Other players who are associated with the team from IPL include James Neesham and Adam Milne.
