According to the legend, once while roaming Maharishi Narad, Girraj reached Vindhya mountain. There he was warmly welcomed by the gods. After which Vindhyachal said in his praise that he is full of all virtues. Narad ji saw arrogance in his words, so he thought of destroying Vindhyachal’s ego in his mind. Devarshi Narad told Vindhyachal that you have everything, but you do not have the same height as Mount Meru. Narad Muni further said that Mount Meru is much higher than you, its peak is so high that they have reached Devlok. Taking forward his point, Narad ji told Vindhyachal that your peak will never reach there. After saying this, Narada Muni left from there.

After the departure of Narada Muni, Vindhyachal felt very sad about his words. Vindhyachal made some feel humiliated. After which Vindhyachal worshiped Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was pleased with the worship of Vindhyachal and appeared to him and asked him to ask for a boon. On the request of the gods and sages, the Shivling got divided into two forms. Out of which one came to be known as Omkareshwar and the other as Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga.
