New Delhi, ANI. PhD will not be mandatory for recruitment of Assistant Professors in University Departments and Colleges. However, this requirement has been done away with only for recruitments in Ph.D. from 1st July 2021 to 1st July 2023. In view of Kovid-19, as a mandatory qualification for direct recruitment of assistant professors, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has stopped the requirement of PhD for recruitments to be held from July 1, 2021 to July 1, 2023. The UGC has issued a circular to all higher education institutions regarding this decision. This relief has been given to the candidates so that the teachers lying vacant in the university can be recruited. Recently, the Union Education Minister said that due to Kovid, only this year PhD has been stopped for compulsory, but it has not been cancelled.

Steps taken to fill the vacant posts

During a conversation with reporters, the Education Minister had said that PhD is mandatory for appointment to the post of Assistant Professor in higher education institutions of the country. But now this criterion has been removed by the Ministry of Education for this session only, so that the vacancies in the institutions can be filled on time and education is not affected due to possible shortage of faculty and professors. Actually, we were receiving a lot of requests from candidates who wanted to apply for the post but were unable to complete the Ph.D. Therefore, this compulsion has been abolished for this year only.

In 2018 the order was issued for the compulsion of PhD

Now candidates having PG degree, who have qualified the National Eligibility Test will be eligible for recruitment to the post of Assistant Professor. This will help colleges and universities to fill up all the vacant seats quickly. It is to be known that earlier it was necessary to have NET qualified for Assistant Professor recruitment in colleges and universities. But in the year 2018, the Central Government had issued an order that in addition to NET, PhD candidates will be required to get the job at this level.
