Samarkand, Agencies: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the SCO Summit today. He reached Samarkand, Uzbekistan at around 9 pm on Thursday. PM Modi is the last leader to reach the summit. On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi will hold bilateral meetings with leaders of Russia, Uzbekistan and Iran. PM Modi will attend the SCO summit today which will be followed by an urgent meeting of SCO leaders.
PM Modi to hold bilateral meeting with Putin
On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi will attend a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which is eyeing the whole world. This is the first meeting of PM Modi and Putin after the Kovid epidemic and the Ukraine conflict. PM Modi will also hold bilateral meetings with President of Iran Ibrahim Raisi and President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
Summit to be held in India next year
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the Samarkand summit along with 15 global leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping. Uzbekistan is presiding over the SCO Summit 2022. India will then assume the rotational annual presidency of the SCO at the end of the Samarkand summit. The SCO organization currently has eight member countries. These include China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. There are also four observer countries that are interested in joining the organization as full members. These include Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia. The organization has six dialogue partner countries. These are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Turkey.
India joined the organization in the year 2017
The Shanghai Five, formed in 1996, became the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in 2001 with the inclusion of Uzbekistan. With the decision of India and Pakistan to accede to the grouping in 2017 and Tehran as full members in 2021, the SCO became one of the largest multilateral organisations. At the summit, India has strongly called for cooperation on concerns related to regional security, defence, counter terrorism and illicit drug trade etc.
