Voting has started on behalf of Russia to formally make 4 parts of Ukraine – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia. That is, the people living here will decide whether they want to join Russia or not. Voting will continue for 5 days i.e. till 27 September.

Putin had called for referendums in the four parts of Russia-controlled eastern and southern Ukraine. The number of Russian citizens here is very high. For these 4 regions to become part of Russia, it would mean economic destruction of Ukraine.

Russia had declared Donetsk and Luhansk independent at the beginning of the war. Now Russia wants to form its government here, for which voting is taking place. At the same time, Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014.

Russia is accelerating preparations for occupation
It has been 7 months since the Russia-Ukraine war that started on 24 February. Both the countries are not ready to bow down. Meanwhile, Zelensky claimed that in September his army had liberated 6,000 square kilometers of land from Russian occupation.

Russia has also admitted that its forces have retreated from here. But Putin says it was done so that troops could regroup in eastern Ukraine held by pro-militias. Voting is also being done to speed up the annexation of Ukraine.

Putin engaged in increasing Russia’s military power

  • In the areas where the voting is taking place, Ukrainian soldiers are using weapons received from NATO and Western countries. These 4 regions cover 15% of Ukraine. In such a situation, by formally including them in Russia, Russia will be able to claim that Ukraine is attacking its territory and Western countries can also be targeted.
  • On September 21, President Vladimir Putin announced the deployment of 300,000 reserve troops in four regions of Ukraine. By doing so Russia could protect a 1,000-kilometre (620 mi) frontline.
