London, Reuters. Russia has warned of increasing military tensions, given Finland and Sweden’s strong desire to join NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). Has said that Russia will not accept the expansion in US-led NATO. In fact this is a big mistake which western countries do not understand.

Vladimir Putin, who has been in power in Russia since 1999, has said on several occasions that the expansion of NATO after the dissolution of the Soviet Union was only to increase pressure on Russia’s borders. Because of this, Russia has taken military action against Ukraine. Putin is feeling the same danger again with Finland’s decision to join NATO, which shares a nearly 1,300-km border with Russia. In a direct talk to Finnish President Niinisto, Putin has expressed fears of worsening bilateral relations. Earlier Russia has warned Finland of military action.

Europe’s security will not be strengthened but weakened by NATO expansion: Kremlin

Russia is once again facing a security related challenge with Finland and Sweden readying for NATO membership. Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Rybekov has said Washington and Brussels should not be under the illusion that Moscow will accept the expansion in a simple way. Helsinki and Stockholm’s decision to join NATO is indeed a big mistake, which will be known to him in the times to come. In April, Russia warned of deploying nuclear-armed hypersonic missiles near the Finnish border, following signals from both countries that they would join NATO. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said that the expansion of NATO will not strengthen but weaken Europe’s security.
