Jaipur:
Congress leader Sachin Pilot is campaigning alone ahead of the elections to be held in Rajasthan later this year. In such a situation, Pilot was seen confirming the apprehensions of the party by targeting his own government and Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. Sachin Pilot was campaigning in Nagaur, a stronghold of the Jat community and farmers, when he raised the issue of the recent leak of general knowledge test for teachers in Rajasthan.
The former Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan said at a rally, “Sometimes question papers are leaked, sometimes exams are cancelled… It is very painful and disturbing… Children, their parents for education How much trouble they face. Students work hard day and night to prepare for their exams,”
Pilot said, “I hope the government will go after the big fish instead of the small brokers.”
The Congress leader’s wide reach till January 20 has put his party in worry and has renewed the unresolved tussle over the leadership of the two top party leaders in Rajasthan.
Sources close to Pilot say that his public relations program is aimed at strengthening the Congress and maintaining its political position in Rajasthan. Sources said this is the reason why he is focusing on the Jat and farmers’ stronghold, which is the traditional base of the Congress.
Experts say that this is Pilot’s political calculation to remain relevant in Rajasthan politics as State Congress President Govind Singh Dotasara is busy with grassroots organization work and the Chief Minister is busy preparing the last budget.
Pilot’s campaign comes weeks after Gehlot’s explosive interview to NDTV, in which Gehlot called Pilot a ‘traitor’ and said he would not become CM.
Gehlot had said about his young rival, “A gaddar (traitor) cannot be the chief minister. The high command cannot make Sachin Pilot the chief minister… A man who does not have 10 MLAs, who rebelled. He betrayed the party.” Granted, he is a traitor.”
The Gehlot-Pilot standoff began when the two competed for the chief minister’s post after the Congress’s victory in Rajasthan in 2018 and peaked in 2020. Pilot revolted with 20 MLAs supporting him and camped in Delhi for weeks.
The rebellion ended after the Gandhi family assured Pilot of change, although that assurance never materialised. Also Gehlot refused to give anything. The dispute has continued since then without any resolution.
Sources say that Sachin Pilot had taken permission from Rahul Gandhi for this public relations during the Bharat Jodo Yatra to strengthen the party before the elections.
Nagaur, where Pilot was speaking today, is the home turf of former BJP ally Hanuman Beniwal’s Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP). Beniwal left his alliance with the BJP over the controversial farm laws and is believed to have made inroads into the Jat vote bank that traditionally elects the Congress.
