A big news related to the Commonwealth Games is coming out. Actually, from 2026, only athletics and aquatics will be mandatory in the Commonwealth Games. This will give the host cities the freedom to include sports of their choice from the core list. Core sports also include T20 cricket and triple basketball. This format has been approved in the online meeting of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) general body.
The Commonwealth Games 2026-2030 strategic blueprint invites future hosts to implement new concepts to enhance the benefits of hosting and make the Games more cost-effective, engaging new spectators, according to the CGF statement. Co-hosting and organizing a large number of represented competitions.
T20 cricket included in core sports
The statement further said – as part of the current consultation with international federations, the ambition of the revised sports program is. Which will give the hosts more flexibility to choose from a wide list of core sports. Core sports include T20 cricket, beach volleyball and triplex basketball, which were previously optional sports. The core list of 15 sports also includes badminton, shooting, table tennis, wrestling (freestyle) and hockey.
CWG Games to be held in Birmingham next year
The CGF wants at least 15 sports to be organized during the Games. The Commonwealth Games will be held in Birmingham in 2022, while the search for a host for 2026 is still on. Shooting has been dropped from next year’s Birmingham Games, while women’s T20 cricket has been replaced.
The CGF said that potential hosts will be encouraged to consider alternative sports villages in the future, without the need to house the players in the newly constructed space or in the same location.
Cricket will be included in the Olympics!
The campaign for the entry of cricket in the Olympic Games is also going on fast. The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently said that it is trying to get cricket a place in the Olympics to be held in Los Angeles in 2028. For this, the ICC has also formed a working group. Cricket has been a part of the Olympic Games only once. Cricket was included in the second Modern Olympics held in France in 1900. Then only two teams took part as Britain and France. Britain won the gold and France the silver.
