Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said in one of his tweets, “Grateful to PM Narendra Modi and FM Nirmala Sitharaman ji for the visionary decision to reduce Central Excise duty by Rs 8 per liter on petrol and Rs 6 per liter on diesel. With this decision of the Center, the price of petrol will be cheaper by Rs 9.5 per liter and diesel by Rs 7 per liter.

Despite this second reduction in central excise duty, the price of petrol and diesel in states like Maharashtra, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand and Kerala is around Rs 10-15 more than in BJP-ruled states. The Union Minister said that the time has come to wake up these states and reduce VAT to give relief to their consumers.

On Saturday, an important decision was taken with the aim of providing relief to the people from the high fuel prices. In fact, the Center announced a reduction of Rs 8 per liter in excise duty on petrol and Rs 6 per liter on diesel. To which Finance Minister Sitharaman said that this move will have a revenue impact of about Rs 1 lakh crore per year.

He also urged the states to reduce VAT on petroleum products to give relief to the common man. The government had similarly reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel in November last year on the eve of Diwali. Then the excise duty on petrol was reduced by Rs 5 per liter and on diesel by Rs 10 per liter.
