Dubai Agencies. Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan was elected the new President of the United Arab Emirates, UAE on Saturday. Quoting the Khaleej Times report, news agency IANS has said that 61-year-old Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan will be the country’s third president.

It is known that Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan passed away at the age of 73. He was the second President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). 40 days of national mourning has been declared in the UAE on the death of Sheikh. On the death of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, apart from PM Modi, people from all over the world including Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condoled his death.

Sheikh Mohammed is also the Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces. Sheikh Mohammed has been elected by the Federal Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates. Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan will take over as the President for a five-year term before being eligible for re-election.

It is noteworthy that Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan took office as the first President after the formation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971, till November 2, 2004. Following his death, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was elected the President of the UAE as his successor. Born in 1948, Sheikh Khalifa was the second President of the United Arab Emirates and the 16th ruler of Abu Dhabi. The UAE developed rapidly during the reign of Sheikh Khalifa.
