Union Coal Minister Prahlad Joshi reached Bilaspur on Wednesday amid reports of power crisis due to shortage of coal in the country. Coal India Chairman Pramod Agarwal has also accompanied him. Both went to Korba by road from the airport. Coal India’s company SECL extracts coal from 41 mines in Chhattisgarh. It accounts for 20 per cent of the coal coming out of the country. 150 lakh metric tonnes of coal is produced annually. SECL extracts 130 lakh metric tonnes of coal from the mines of Korba district itself.
Coal India Chairman Pramod Agarwal did not speak to the media. Coal Minister Prahlad Joshi said that they will brainstorm to increase coal production and review the production by taking a meeting of officials in Korba. At this time the demand has increased in the country and due to rains, there was a problem in extracting coal from the mines, so there was such a situation, but now the situation is completely under control. He said that at present the demand of power companies is 1.1 million tonnes, but we have started producing 2 million tonnes as of today itself.
Minister Joshi will visit the mega project Deepka, Gevra and Kusmunda mines of South Eastern Coalfield Limited (SECL). Coal Minister Joshi will return to Bilaspur from Gevra at 2:30 pm after the meeting of officials. Then at three o’clock will leave for Ranchi by special plane from Bilaspur.
Production decreased due to reduced power consumption during the Corona period
The main reason for deepening the coal crisis in the country is believed to be the reduction in production during the Corona period. Officials say that the states to which coal is provided by SECL, those states refused to take coal from Coal India due to low power generation. Coal purchase contracts were also not renewed by them. Due to this SECL had to reduce production.
