A court in UP’s Gonda district on Saturday convicted a youth and his mother for abducting and raping a teenage girl. In the same case, the court sentenced the youth to 14 years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 17,000, while the mother was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000. Special Public Prosecutors Ashok Kumar Singh and Sunil Kumar Mishra told that the court of Additional Sessions Judge/Special Judge (Poxo Act) Chandra Mohan Chaturvedi gave this decision.
Giving details of the incident, he told that a resident of a village in Kaudiya police station area in Gonda had given a complaint that on the night of October 12, 2016, a young man named Kanhaiya had lured his daughter (15) away. The person had alleged that his daughter had taken away jewelery worth Rs 70,000 and cash of Rs 7,000 with her. Singh told that on the basis of Tahrir, the local police had started investigating the matter by filing charges. After collecting evidence, the police filed a charge sheet against the accused Kanhaiya, his father Jaswant Lal and mother Shyama Devi under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.
During the hearing, Additional Sessions Judge/Special Judge (Poxo Act) Chandra Mohan Chaturvedi, considering the evidence available on the file, after hearing the arguments of the prosecution and defense advocates, convicted the accused Kanhaiya and his mother Shyama Devi, while the accused Jaswant was acquitted due to lack of evidence. According to Singh, if the fine amount is not paid, the culprits will have to face additional punishment. He told that the period spent by the convicts in jail during the trial will be adjusted towards the sentence period.
