Hand pumps in some districts of Bihar are spewing uranium. This shocking revelation has come in research. The source of uranium is being searched after the water poisoning was revealed in the research of Mahavir Cancer Institute. High levels of uranium were found on the south side of the Ganges east of the Gandak river. Its level has been found in Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Patna, Nalanda and Nawada of Bihar from 30 to 50 microns. Now the whole team is trying to trace the source of uranium, as it is a major cause of cancer and liver damage.
uranium exposed for the first time
Arsenic has been found in the water of Bihar. But for the first time uranium has been revealed. Research work on ground water is going on in Bihar. Ashok Ghosh, president of the State Pollution Control Council and HOD Research of Mahaveer Cancer Institute, says that he has been researching water in Bihar for a long time. Work on arsenic started in 2004-05. So far, about 46 thousand hand pumps have been checked in Bihar. In the last two to three years of research, work was started on other things besides arsenic.
Indo-UK study for uranium
Ashok Ghosh says that Indo-UK study has been done recently. Scientists from IIT Kharagpur, National Institute of Hydrology, University of Main Chester, UK, British Geological Society and University of Birmingham were involved in this research along with Mahaveer Cancer Institute. This shocking fact has come to the fore in research conducted in collaboration with scientists from India and the UK.
Sample taken from hand pump of Bihar
Surveys were conducted for arsenic and uranium across Bihar. Earlier it was believed that Bihar does not have uranium. It was in Jharkhand, but uranium was not yet confirmed in Bihar. For the first time, two reports were released simultaneously in which uranium has been confirmed.
The surprising thing is that where uranium was found in very high levels, there was less arsenic and where there was more arsenic, there was less uranium. Both are not found together in a hand pump. This is also the subject of research. Now the study also has to find out from where and what is the source of uranium.
Uranium found from hand pumps of these districts
Uranium found in 10 percent hand pumps
Ashok Ghosh says that the normal level of uranium is 30 microns / liter, but in Bihar its label has come between 30 and 50 microns, which is considered dangerous. In many places, the normal value has been exceeded in the hand pump test. In many places, the label of uranium has been very high, but has been found only up to 50 microns. Although uranium is not found in all hand pumps, uranium has been found in 10 percent of hand pumps.
Uranium will not be far from the RO of the houses
Ashok Ghosh, president of the State Pollution Control Council and HOD of the research department of Mahaveer Cancer Institute, says that even ordinary water filters in the house will not remove uranium. A special type of membrane is prepared for this. Ordinary water filters and ROs do not have the ability to separate uranium as much as they claim.
