New Delhi/Washington, Jn. Discussion of US sanctions on India regarding the supply of Russian missile system S-400 is hot. Will India face US sanctions? The US has been upset with the supply of Russian S-400 missile systems from the beginning. This defense deal between India and Russia was done in the year 2018, since then America is strongly opposing this defense deal. He has threatened to impose sanctions on India. However, India has said many times that it is fully committed to making this agreement with Russia. Many Republican Party leaders in the US Senate are in favor of India. In such a situation, now the ball is in the court of the Biden administration as to what decision they take. With this, today we will also know under which provisions America is threatening India.
Republican Party’s top senator in favor of India
A top Republican senator has backed growing demands to exempt India from sanctions on the purchase of the S-400 missile system from Russia. Tommy Taberville, a member of the delegation that visited India and South East Asia, said that we support the waiver of sanctions to India for the purchase of Russia’s S-400 missile system. Our relations with India are getting stronger. On the other hand, the US has expressed concern over the supply of S-400 missile system by Russia to India. Meanwhile, the Biden administration has not yet clarified whether it will impose sanctions on India under provisions of the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) for the purchase of the S-400 missile system.
America is not in a position to impose sanctions
1- Pro. Harsh V Pant believes that the Biden administration is not in a position to impose sanctions on India in the current situation. He said that India-US relations have now entered a new era. So the matter of sanctions on India is not that easy now. The Biden administration has to understand the security challenge India is facing from China. Apart from this, India cannot change its defense policy under pressure from any other country. India’s foreign policy is independent.
2- Prof Pant said that within the US and in the US Senate, the group favoring India is very strong. Quite impressive. There are a large number of Indian-origin lawmakers in the US Senate. He cannot ignore the interests of India. The Biden administration will be under pressure from this powerful group before taking any action against India. Apart from this, there is a cordial relationship between the Biden administration and the Modi government. In such a situation, there is little hope that the Biden administration will take any step against India. He will impose any kind of military or economic sanctions on India.
3- He said that America is currently focusing on China. His entire focus is on China. In the race for superpower, China is giving a big competition to America. India can be a great ally of America to deal with China. In the formation of the Quad, it has been decided how useful and effective India’s role is in America’s new defense strategy. In such a situation, America would never want India to be weak in any way in South Asia. He will not weaken India. He stressed that India has become a major need of America in view of America’s challenges today.
4- India-US relations got a new direction during the era of former US President Barack Obama. The US had given India the status of a strategic partner. After this, the defense agreements between India and America have increased significantly. After this, India has finalized defense agreements with the US. If the US imposes sanctions on India, then the status of a strategic partner will automatically end. This could deal a big blow to America’s defense sales.
Fear of this law of America
1- There is a law in America to impose sanctions on a country or person for going contrary to its interests. Under this law, America imposes sanctions on any hostile country or person. This law is called Countering America’s Adversaries Through Section Act (CAATSA) in the US. The US created this as a punitive action against its rivals. This law came into force on August 2, 2017. It was implemented in January 2018. Through this law, America counters the aggression of enemy countries Iran, Russia and North Korea.
2- This law gives the US President the power to impose sanctions on anti-American countries. The President gives the power to impose at least 5 of the 12 on individuals and countries belonging to the military and intelligence sectors of those countries. Especially that threatens America. Through this law, the President can also impose export restrictions on the country concerned. Due to this, that country may have to face sanctions related to US defense and trade. The US can ban the export of nuclear-related items to such countries.
