Senior health ministry officials told a parliamentary committee studying the Child Marriage Prohibition (Amendment) Bill that the proposed law could help reduce infant mortality and maternal mortality. Sources gave this information on Monday. Several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and think-tanks on Monday presented their stand before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports, which is studying the bill.

Sources in the committee said that while briefing the committee headed by BJP Rajya Sabha member Vinay Sahasrabuddhe on the bill, senior officials, including Health Ministry secretary Rajesh Bhushan, clearly stated that early marriage and early child birth will affect the health of both the mother and child. may have an adverse effect. The officials of the ministry were overall in support of the bill and also suggested that the bill may reduce infant mortality rate and maternal mortality rate.

He said that this bill can also help in preventing cases like shortness of children. Union Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani presented the bill in Parliament on December 21 last year amid protests by opposition parties. She had demanded that the bill be sent to the Parliamentary Standing Committee for further study. The tenure of the committee studying the bill was extended by three months in March this year.
