Belgrade, Agencies: Vinesh Phogat became the first Indian woman wrestler to win two medals at the World Championships on Wednesday by defeating Emma Jonah of Sweden in the repechage. 28-year-old Vinesh had earlier won a bronze medal at the World Wrestling Championships in Kazakhstan in 2019. Vinesh was a gold medalist but lost 0-7 in a one-sided match to the Mongolian wrestler in the 53kg category on Tuesday.
Mongolian wrestler Khulan Batkhuyag cemented his place in the final, giving Vinesh a chance to play in the repechage round. In the repechage, Vinesh first defeated the Kazakhstan wrestler 4-0. Azerbaijan’s Leila Gurbanova could not make it to the next round due to an injury, as Vinesh entered the bronze medal round. Vinesh, a three-time Commonwealth Games medalist, then clinched the medal after beating Ema of Sweden 8-0 in the bronze medal bout.
Nisha will play for bronze today
Nisha Dahiya will play for bronze in 68kg. She entered the semi-finals by defeating Sofia of Bulgaria 11-0. But she lost 4-5 to Japan’s Ami Ishii in the semi-finals. In the women’s 57kg event, Sarita Mor defeated Canada’s Hannah Taylor 4-2 in the opening round of World Under-23 Championships bronze medalist. Sarita then lost 0-7 to Anhelina Lisk of Poland. Apart from her, Mansi Ahlawat was defeated 5-3 by Poland’s Jovita Maria in 59kg in the quarterfinals. Manasi could not make it to the repechage round as Maria lost in the semi-finals.
What is repechage round
Wrestlers who lose in the opening round through the repechage round get another chance to win a bronze medal. The opponent you lose and reaches the final, then the opponent wrestler gets a chance to play repechage.
